Frequently Asked Questions

Who do you evaluate?

Children and young adults who need support in their lives to improve their academic, social, behavioral, emotional, or cognitive functioning. With clear diagnoses and recommendations, a psychological evaluation can create a strong blueprint to help individuals function at school, home, and in the community.

Can you explain the evaluation process?

The first steps in considering an evaluation is to set up a brief phone conversation where Dr. Davidson can learn about your child, speak about the evaluation process, and answer any questions.

After the phone conversation, should the family and Dr. Davidson decide to proceed, an in-person meeting is scheduled to gather a detailed developmental history. This meeting is typically 90-120 minutes long. It is helpful to bring any relevant medical records/teacher reports/IEPs etc. to this meeting.

The next step is to set up testing session(s) with the child. Dr. Davidson typically does all testing on weekends and school holidays as it is important that the child doesn’t have to be pulled out from school for the evaluation. The length of time and number of sessions varies based on the referral question, the child's attention/motivation, and any questions that arise during testing. Also during this time, parents/teachers/service providers fill out standardized questionnaires that can be used in conjunction with the child’s self reports and test results. The overall idea is to get a full picture of the child’s cognitive, academic, and social-emotional functioning across settings.

Lastly, around 30 days after the last testing session, we schedule a feedback session. Usually Dr. Davidson meets with the parents first, presents the report, and answers questions. The report will have all findings/results and include recommendations for supports for all areas of his/her functioning. Next, she meets with the child, gives them their own age-appropriate report that highlights their strengths/challenges/recommendations.
